There is a race, now a day in our society, to keep unique names. This unnecessary pursuit has resulted in some very funny names being kept, that too from the Quran. Here we will discuss about why you should avoid these Quranic names for you baby.

In the race of keeping new names, different names have been kept in different areas. Families are trying to adopt a name which no one has heard before and anyone can understand that what results will come?

1. Lack of knowledge

Most of the people are unaware of the Arabic language as it not their mother tongue. They only know how to recite the Quran without its proper understanding. This is the main cause of such blunders. Some people are naming their children only because they liked the pronunciation of some word. Some families were seen compel to do so because of their grand-parents.

a) Using verb as a name

A verb cannot be a noun but what will happen if people will don’t understand the meanings of Quranic words? “Anamta” (انعمت) has become a common name and it is a verb meaning “You Graced”. In one area, a child’s name is “Inzalna”(انزلنا)’We Reaveled’. Similarly, a girl’s name is “Man Tasha”(من تشآ)’ Whom You will or as You please’. When asked, I found out that its root is “Al-Zeen”(الذین). On another place there was a name, “Kalu Khan” (کالوخان). When we saw his face, he was fair. c) Some more examples from the society

A while ago, a rickshaw driver had written his son’s name :Sariq”(سارق) which means a thief, on the rickshaw. He started explaining that he had seen it in the Quran. He was convinced to change it by explaining it.  A child told in the class that there is a girl named Zulka(ذالک) in his village. In our neighborhood, a woman’s name has been kept Fahia(فھی).If you are interested, here are some names form the Quran. One of our mosque fellow named his daughter “Linta”(لنت). The imam of the mosque asked him to change it, and he replied: “The girl’s grandmother liked this word during recitation, so she kept it, so for the sake of grandmother’s happiness, we cannot change this name.

d) Names having worst meanings

In our village, a name was kept “Hameya”(حامیۂ). One gentleman said “Worisha” is the name of the daughter, is it okay? Despite telling that it is inappropriate , he was not willing to change it. Another man has named his daughter … Aulik(اوليك) and his son’s name is Kazim (کظیم). He says they are in the Holy Quran. I was at the barber’s and he said that Allah has given my brother a daughter and we have named her “Manha”(منھا). I said where is this, so he started saying” I have selected this from the Quran”. So this is the behavior which also effects in this matter. There is a person named “Khabal“(خبل) in our neighborhood whereas its meaning is ‘mischief’.

e) Adding some word with the name of Anbia and Sahaba

This culture is also very common that we add the word of another language with the names of Anbia And with the names of Sahaba. Pathan families name their children against the names of Sahaba or Anbiya, then ‘Hazrat’ is also added with them. Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Bilal, and these are some which I myself have heard. Now here the word Hazrat is from Persion . Similarly Bismillah Khan, and InshAllah Khan were also reported there.

f) Description of some other mistaken names

“Lareeb Fia” (لا ریب فیۂ) a girl was named and a woman suggested “Pharaoh” and an Afghan child “Zaneem” (زنیم). One of our dear ones suggested the name of his grandson Iblis (ابلیس), when asked, he said that it comes in the Quran and whenever I read it, I like it very much, so I thought to keep this name. Sheikh Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) explained that it is said that a person named his son “Naktal”, when asked, he started saying that this was the name of Propher Yusuf’s (peace be upon him) brother, while its not true… etc. (Al-Sharh Al-Mumti) I heard the name of a woman in Swat: Fatrani (فطرنی). Even stranger than this was the name of an old woman among men: Tajrian! A woman named Hunaj (ھنج), when asked where this name came from, she said it is in the Quran, when asked where, she said “One of the women of our village had suggested the name “Fahisha” فاحشۂ for her niece, maybe they liked the sound of it.

This important thing has been proved that only the Quranic word for the name is not enough. If you do not know the meaning of it, most probably you are going to commit a huge mistake. A good name is the first gift which a child receives from parents, therefore, they must not take it causally and this first present must be a good and meaningful. Above mentioned names were given mistakenly and the remedy is to consult a scholar or you yourself have to go for a search. Names have a great impact on human psychology and character, therefore, they must be chosen wisely.
